Books & Film

To learn about the world around us, history, different cultures, foods, and languages, makes us all better global citizens.

That beautiful library pictured above can be found in Dublin, Ireland at Trinity College. Make sure to look at the Book of Kells that dates back to the 9th century.

Follow the professors journey

The Lost Ark of the Covenant is the real-life account of an astounding quest—professor Tudor Parfitt's effort to recover the revered artifact that contained the Ten Commandments, sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

How about a nice long hike?

Bill Bennett, a film director, decided to hike the 500 mile pilgrimage across Spain, the Santiago de Compostela. It was not an easy trek to be certain, but the stories about his adventures, friends he made, and lessons learned make this a worthwhile read. To those WanderingFriends that hiked behind Montserrat all those years ago? You were on the trail!

Those magnificent men in their flying machines!

Long before he wrote the Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery was an accomplished pilot. Along with Jean merman and Henri Guillaumet, he was chosen to pioneer new mail routes across the globe. Part thriller, part romance, and set during a world conflict, this is a great story of their heroism.

Is an African Safari on your bucket list?

In the tradition of Bill Bryson, a new writer brings us the lively adventures and biting wit of an African safari guide. Peter Allison gives us the guide’s-eye view of living in the bush, confronting the world’s fiercest terrain of wild animals and, most challenging of all, managing herds of gaping tourists. Passionate for the animals of the Kalahari, Allison works as a top safari guide in the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. As he serves the whims of his wealthy clients, he often has to stop the impulse to run as far away from them as he can, as these tourists are sometimes more dangerous than a pride of lions.

A really fun and easy read. I also picked up his second book! Enjoy

Down Under is the British title of a 2000 travelogue book about Australia written by best-selling travel writer Bill Bryson.

Bill Bryson describes his travels by railway and car throughout Australia, his conversations with people in all walks of life about the historygeography, unusual plants and animals of the country, and his wry impressions of the life, culture and amenities (or lack thereof) in each locality.

Bryson's research enabled him to include many stories about Australia's 19th-century explorers and settlers who suffered extreme deprivations, as well as details about its natural resources, culture, and economy. His writings are intertwined with recurring humorous themes.

Michelangelo lead such an interesting life. Not only was he an accomplished man of visual arts, but also a poet.

If you have not seen the movie starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo, I highly recommend it. A good read as well, pick up a copy!

A fun read for those with a little wanderlust in their hearts.

We may be in lock down, but our minds are free to travel.

Enjoy Troost's humorous sojourn to a tiny island in the south Pacific. The hysterical true story of a harrowing and hilarious two-year odyssey in the distant South Pacific island nation of Kiribati--possibly The Worst Place on Earth.

This non-fiction account of Churchill's personal life as he navigates his country through the ravages of WWII reads like a piece of adventure fiction - though sadly a tragic account of everyday life in London as the bombs fell.

So as we are asked to hunker down during the early dark nights, give this a read ~ helps keep things in perspective.

Travel isn’t always what we dream it will be, but...oh the stories that follow! For the 25 women in this book who packed their sense of humor as they traveled from Alaska to Zanzibar, the journey brought tales of misadventure that their children and grandchildren, and readers of this book, will never forget.

An alert traveler reminded me of a great summer read, "Origins" by Dan Brown.

This thriller takes me back to our great trip to Spain. Such great memories as Robert Langdon, the main character, dashes about the Segrada Familia, Mila House, Montserrat, and Parc Guall.

Loved each and every one of those day trips!
